Though small in size and population, there is no gainsaying that many a remarkably talented person has been produced in Manipur- singers, sportspersons, actors and what not! Many indeed are amazingly talented sons and daughters of the soil. Some of them have even achieved worldwide fame! First, let us look at the talents of the movie actors of Manipur. Despite the small market for Manipuri movies, the production capacity of Manipur film industry is, without exaggeration, remarkable! These days movie making has become a regular affair unlike bygone time or years when we managed to see only one or two movies in a year. There has been a good deal of improvement in terms of both quantity and quality. Most of the new actors seem to possess adequate acting flair. I once had this worrying assumption that only those not-so-good- looking people of Manipur have the needed talent for acting, but today we have seen many pretty and handsome actors that regularly grace our digital movies.
Earlier there used to be this stereotyped or prejudicial view against local actors- they won’t be up to the mark or that we won’t enjoy their acting as much as we do Hindi or English ones. But, things and times are changing in favor of the less fortunate actors of our land- now the number of people who really enjoy the acting our local actors is increasing year by year; I have come across some realistic ones that very well depict the rot and reality of the present day society. Apart from this, the amusing roles played by the great comedians are things not worthy to be missed! Comedy actors like Hemanta of Mantri Dollansana fame, Guna, Joseph, Rangilal, Manglem etc are some of the many who definitely are in possession of natural gift of entertaining and amusing people. They wouldn’t lag behind Jim Carrey, Rob Schneider, Adam sandler, Johny Lever and so on and so forth if they were born in Hollywood or Bollywood! Manipuri cinematographers and directors too are now capable of keeping pace with the changing time and demand. And they are very likely to bring glory to the land and its film industry. As a matter of fact, we sometimes get to hear surprising news of them getting recognition in the form of national and international awards! Sometimes, some doubts arise on the sustainability of the industry, but what we have seen so far is that ‘it is’ thriving and doing fine- So far so good like Bryan Adams’ song. Hopefully, it will grow and contribute towards construction of a healthy society and free it from prejudice, corruption and parochialism. Sometimes, it is more exciting and enjoyable to watch and see the portrayal of the immediate world in which we live our daily life than those of the fantastic and far away things.
Next coming to musical talent of the state, the tiny state is literally brimming with it. Both the hills and the dales of the state have produced many a gifted local and western music artiste over the past decades. To name just one singer from among the many, Tapta is one with an amazing musical talent whose ability to compose relevant and very amusing songs is now a well-known thing in the state; he never fails to produce songs that are based on the immediate issues, phenomena or happenings in the land. There are a lot more other singers and musicians, who are by no means inferior to the best talents found in other parts of the country and the world!
Now coming to the sporting talent of the state, it won’t be an exaggeration to say that the tiny Northeastern state is unmistakably a sporting powerhouse of India. Very often, our athletes do not fail to surprise us by their amazing feats in both national and international sporting arena. Suranjoy, Nanao, Mary Kom, Sarita Devi are a few of the many athletes of the state that have taken not only their opponents but also us by surprise by their astounding achievements. It’s now becoming increasingly difficult to count the number of great national and international sportspersons that the state has produced over the past many years.
But one sad thing is the fact that many of the youth of the state have fallen prey to drugs and violence. In the eighties and nineties of the last century, very many youth of our state got infected with the most dreaded HIV/AIDS, many of whom have succumbed to the disease and many others are living with the virus. In fact, Manipur is one of the worst HIV/AIDS affected states of the country. The percentage of HIV/AIDS infected is one of the highest in the whole of the country, which is a very disturbing and alarming fact. Besides the problem of drugs and AIDS, the state today is the worst violence-hit in the country. It has now virtually become a normal daily affair for the denizens of the state to hear about violent deaths.
It is true that Manipur is a land that abounds with all kinds of talents, merrymaking, festivities and so on, but it’s also equally true that today it is fast becoming a land of violence, crime and death. It is now a well-accepted fact that crime rate in Manipur is at its record high. The healing hand of the Almighty is perhaps what Manipur needs the most at the moment
