The Hindustan Times has this report today on the Indo-NSCN (IM) (I would not say Indo-Naga) peace talk-- m.hindustantimes.com/india-news/peace-pact-between-govt-nscn-im-is-a-framework-agreement/article1-1376136.aspx.
I have reproduced passages from the report and made some brief observation on them.
REPORT
The landmark peace accord signed on Monday....Two government officials familiar with the negotiations that preceded the signing of the accord described the agreement as “initial and preliminary” in nature.
MY OBSERVATION:
Well, if the recent accord is "initial and preliminary" still in the 80th round of talk between the two parties since mid-1997, that means the nearly two decades of talks has been a serial failure until the last one. But, this last one is not a success either for the rebel group as it is for the neighbors of this troublemaker state of Nagaland while they are not parties to the talks--the agreement the two parties arrived at is still initial and preliminary after all those interminable rounds. I don't think the talk after however many rounds will go further than this. This is a full stop drawn out as long as it takes until the dream fades out at the death in a sleep of its dreamer.
REPORT:
...the NSCN-IM’s most contentious demand – the creation of Nagalim or Greater Nagaland comprising all Naga-inhabited areas of the northeast – had been “set aside for now”. The accord will be “confined to Nagaland”, the official added.
MY OBSERVATION:
The Nagalim or Greater Nagaland dream is a nightmare the dreamer will die in. History is not the big show of "truth prevails in the long run." History rather is the evolution of societies along the axes of power irrespective of their spirit's truth or falsehood value. The Nagalim dream lacks both the positive value of truth "to prevail in the long run"and the brute power to force their agenda ahead. It will lose steam soon.
THE ACCORD WILL BE CONFINED TO NAGALAND. It's clear where the talk is heading.
REPORT:
A statement issued by Muivah following the signing ceremony said: “Better understanding has been arrived at and a framework agreement has been concluded basing on the unique history and position of the Nagas and recognising the universal principle that in a democracy, sovereignty lies with the people.”
MY OBSERVATION:
HOW THE HELL ARE THE NAGAS UNIQUE? What does the oft-repeated, over-hyped and romanticized thingy "the unique history and position of the Nagas" mean? In what sense are they unique? Are the Nagas unique because no other ethnic groups under, beside, above or inside the sun are Nagas and live the Naga life/history? If so, what ethnic group on the earth and their history are not unique? If all ethnic groups turn out unique, what is so unique about this boring, common, hackneyed uniqueness?
Ethnic pride and ethnic nationality is narcissistic senselessness and foolhardy beyond certain point. Muivah & co should understand this.
